Jack Hub and an Anonymous speaker submitted the following additional information from Dr. Batnigi during General Public Comment, as follows: “I’ve lived in San Francisco for the greater part of the last 20 years, as a student, as a physician - caring for some of our most vulnerable patients, as an entrepreneur - who has started companies that created hundreds of jobs in San Francisco, and as a parent of 3 young children. I am also an immigrant. I was born in Gaza, coming to the United States as a young child. On Nov 17, I had 37 close family members killed by an Israeli airstrike. Days later, I had another 22 family members killed - just before the temporary pause. Israeli airstrikes killed 3 generations of my family at once, from my aunt in her 70s to the children of my cousins as young as months old. Our family in Gaza is a family of physicians, artists, software engineers, and most of all children. They were erased. My surviving family are increasingly desperate. They have no safe place to go. Israel has brought the health system to a halt. As the World Health Organization warns, untreated disease will soon kill more people in Gaza that the Israeli miliary has. My family cannot find food. My family cannot find safe drinking water. This is collective punishment of 2.2 million people. Starvation cannot be a weapon of war. As a progressive City, we cannot stay silent about the ongoing murder of civilians at a scale not seen in this century. Putting more bodies of kids in Gaza’s soil does not pave a path to peace. Our is a City that may be unique in adopting the future before others - especially so on when it comes to social justice.
