Board of Supervisors Meeting Minutes 7/23/2019 ADDENDUM The following information is provided by speaker(s), pursuant to Administrative Code, Section 67.16. The content is neither generated by, nor subject to approval or verification of accuracy by, the Clerk of the Board or the Board of Supervisors. A speaker submitted the following additional information during General Public Comment, as follows: “According to Hoover Institute’s report, Beijing undertook a systematic program called “united front” to exploit overseas Chinese communities to advance its own political, economic, and security interests. One of the united front organizations is the China Overseas Exchange Association, where Rose Pak was the Executive Director. Rose Pak had let protests and campaigns against groups the PRC targets to silence. Rose Pak was also a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. Members are expected to write reports about how their activities have aligned with China’s interests and to detail their work on China’s behalf. Supervisor Peskin said in 2008 that Rose Pak represented PRC’s interest. Hoover Institute recommends united front organization members be required to register as PRC’s foreign agents. How can you name San Francisco’s Chinatown Subway Station after a Communist Party’s agent, whose actions were harmful to American interests and values?” A speaker submitted the following additional information during General Public Comment, as follows: “America’s core values is build upon on religious freedom. 300 years agao the first American settlers came to this land to purse their religious freedom. The Founding Fathers state in the Declaration of Independence that all people are born with unalienable rights to freedom. 300 years later, I came here to pursue the same American Dream. This Dream is based upon religious freedom because free mind unleashed creativity and free market. And therefore comes the prosperity and peace ultimately flourishes. So it really surprises me about the idea of putting Rose Pak’s name on subway station. Rose Pak bullied many people including their religion. She doesn’t represent the values of America. What she has done is totally against the cornerstone of this country. So I urge Supervisors to rescind the resolution and stand together with the community not name the subway station after Rose Pak.” Wang Jianzhong submitted the following additional information during General Public Comment, as follows: “My name is Wang Jianzhong, living district 1. I am a professional artist. My artwork was exhibited at the Louvre Museum. I oppose to name Chinatown subway station after Rose Pak. I was illegally imprisoned and suffered inhuman persecution and torture in Mainland China because practicing Falun Gong before coming to SF. The prison guards ripped off my clothes and put me in a cell under only 10 degree Celsius for two days. They also used electronic batons to shock me, and had other prisoners to beat me until I lost conscious, they placed me inside an iron cage and then locked the cage for 20 days, and more…those are painful and unbearable memories. Rose Pak helped CCP to extend the persecution policy against Falun Gong to SF. Her bad reputation is very. I urge you to rescind your decision on this naming. Thank you!” Carmen Shen submitted the following additional information during General Public Comment, as follows: “I live in San Francisco Sunset district. On behalf of the Coalition Against Naming After Rose Pak, I am here to straighten out a rumor that has been circulating in the City Hall. Some people have been spreading rumors to Board of Supervisors and MTA Board that the people who are against naming Chinatown subway station after Rose Pak ‘do not live in San Francisco’.” That is simply not true! Many of us have lived in San Francisco for many years. If you didn’t initiate the naming after Rose Pak has triggered many of our painful memory, and that is why we are stepping forth. We have collected over 10,500 signed petitions against the naming after Rose Pak. I want to point that these are NOT petitions from outside San Francisco. These 10,500 petitions are all signed by San Francisco residents, with phone numbers and addresses for verification. We urge you to meet with us to hear the community’s voices. Don’t be misled by ill-intentioned people.” City and County of San Francisco Page 683 Printed at 3:14 pm on 8/20/19
