JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS BOARD OF SUPERVISORS Monday, June 17, 1996 - 2:00 p.m. The Board of Supervisors of the City and County of San Francisco met in regular session on the above date with President Kevin Shelley presiding. CALLING THE ROLL The meeting was called to order at 2:21 p.m. On call of the roll, the following Supervisors were noted present: Supervisors Alioto, Ammiano, Bierman, Brown, Hsieh, Katz, Kaufman, Leal, Shelley, Yaki - 10. APPROVAL OF JOURNAL There being no errors, corrections or omissions, Supervisor Leal, seconded by Supervisor Yaki, moved that the Journal of Proceedings for Monday, May 13, 1996, be approved. Presentation of Guests Suspension of the Rules Supervisor Kaufman introduced and welcomed Ms. Ann Bjornsen and a group of students from McAteer High School who are here in connection with the resolution being considered today commending Students for Positive Action at McAteer. (See infra.) Supervisor Kaufman, seconded by Supervisor Leal, moved to suspend Rule 2.21 of the Rules of Order of the Board of Supervisors to grant privilege of the floor to teacher, Ann Bjornsen. No objection and motion carried. Ms. Bjornsen thanked the Board of Supervisors for recognizing the program and the efforts of the students who have volunteered their time and efforts to improve their school and the surrounding Miraloma community. CONSENT CALENDAR Severed from Consent Calendar Supervisor Ammiano requested that the following measure be severed from the Consent Calendar and considered separately. Recommendation of Government Efficiency and Labor Committee Passed for Second Reading as Amended [Settlement of Tax Refund Litigation, GTE Sprint] Ordinance authorizing the City Attorney to sign a settlement agreement with GTE Sprint Communications Corporation in settlement of a refund claim in the sum of $339,865 (consisting of approximately $227,561 in tax to be refunded and $112,304 interest) to be offset against GTE Sprint Communication Corporation's 1995 tax liability of approximately (($310,104)) $242,910 with the remaining approximately (($29,761)) $96,955 to be paid in cash no later than September 1, 1996. Requests Granted There being no objection, the Board directed the Clerk to comply with the following requests: By Supervisor Alioto, that City Attorney provide the Board of Supervisors with regular, timely updates regarding the status of the City's lawsuit filed against the tobacco industry; any response from the defendants with the date received noted and when any other municipality joins in our lawsuit. By Supervisor Leal, that City Attorney prepare appropriate legislation which would create an Alcohol Vendor Task Force to investigate and cite businesses for code and other violations of legal requirements and compel the appropriate authority to seek prompt revocation of the business license.
