The Mayor may address the Board initially for up to five minutes. Discussion shall not exceed two minutes per question or answer. The following topic was noticed on the agenda representing District 11: 1. Recruitment and retention practices for Police Department to increase language, ethnic, and gender diversity Mayor Daniel Lurie addressed the Board of Supervisors regarding keeping San Francisco safe while upholding our values and laws, including the lowest crime rates, dismantling open air drug markets, supporting immigrant and LGBTQ+ communities, and the Family Zoning Plan process currently underway. President Mandelman then invited Supervisor Chen to ask her question related to the noticed topic. Supervisor Chen began the discussion by asking the following question: Will you commit to immediately implementing programs that have been successful in other counties and cities to recruit and retain female officers, officers of color, and officers with language competence? Mayor Lurie responded that the City has a clear and immediate plan to restore our public safety forces, including ensuring recruits reflect the communities they serve and that the officers have the resources they need. These efforts have resulted in the number of entry level applications increasing by 40%. Supervisor Chen then followed up with the following question: Can you please specify the kind of programming that your department is considering to help build in cultural competency including training, awareness, and protocols around sensitive issues, especially those relating to United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Sanctuary City status? Mayor Lurie responded that the Police Department does extensive outreach to recruit those who best identify with the communities they serve, including multilingual notices, the strengthening of family support policies, merit-based systems, training smarter, and serving communities through integrity. Mayor Lurie did not ask any follow-up questions related to this topic. Supervisor Fielder requested the Board provide her with the opportunity to ask a question not submitted for today’s agenda, pursuant to Administrative Code, Section 2.11.
